What convinced me yardage was not the answer to swimming faster?
I coached high school swimming for three seasons with strict USRPT. I wasn't looking for anything revolutionary but I was given an inexperienced team with 15 weeks until the championship meet. I was desperate for a system that would get me there. I thought I would use it for one season. But the experience greatly changed my views on coaching. I believe strongly in the principles of this training. No two swimmers can train exactly alike and some swimmers respond better than others. The program overall was successful. It produced 3 individuals who podiumed at PIAA State Meet. They each qualified in two events each. Two relay teams did as well. A total of 12 swimmers from the program qualified for Sate Meet (I coached several swimmers from other teams). But the greatest improvement I saw was in the seasonal swimmers. It was clearly a successful training program. A successful program that did not average over 2500 yards a practice for the season.

One high school team's journey into Race Pace Training.
|
The Purpose: provide a real world example of an implementation of USRPT.
The History:
Conclusion:
If I can see this type of result over a 15 week season without the yardage, why wouldn't I try it again?
Disclaimer I am not affiliated with any person, place or thing other than my family. I have modeled my program based on Dr. Brent Rushall's writings, DVDs, and website. Everything on this site should be credited to his work and to those that influenced him. I have done my best to follow it except where I diverge from it, of course. Yes, I diverge from it. This is merely my interpretation of his system.
The History:
- Used for one season 2014/2015. Approximately 15 weeks.
- All swimmers saw improvement in all events.
- Relay times were faster than previous years.
- Highest yardage was 3600. Also over the holiday there were some longer "old school sets". Average yardage was 2400.
- Biggest weakness was the 500. The season started out promising but plateaued and minimal success at the Championships. The swimmers that did those events at Championships should start training more intensely for those events around Christmas time.
